This Wreckage

As His Majesty the Emperor’s Expedition Force sets down on the shores of a mysterious continent, dark forces are already waiting…

This Wreckage is a massive single-player action-adventure RPG map for Warcraft III: the Frozen Throne. Version Gamma is compatible only with version 1.24+ of Warcraft III, due to additional editor features added to the game in that version.

Post your end-game statistics as a comment on the scoreboard, and if you’re the best you might just be crowned Champion! Please note that all comments are moderated and may take some time to appear on this page (comments that attempt to reveal high-level secrets will not be published).

The following pages contain spoilers.

And if you really really need spoiler-tastic help that we don’t want splashed all over this page, contact me privately. I don’t bite. Much.

This Wreckage is a sequel to When the Freedom Slips Away, a smaller (but no less ambitious) singleplayer map, which should function with any version of Warcraft III past 1.16 or so. However, it can trace its lineage back to the Islands in the Sky series and numerous other unfinished projects. The aim of This Wreckage was not to be a revolution, but rather to consolidate solid features into a large and intriguing world.

RDZArena is a multiplayer map based on When the Freedom Slips Away in which much of the technology of This Wreckage was developed and refined. Despite being an 8-player map, the game includes bot AI that takes over all empty slots for an optimal singleplayer experience.

The Islands in the Sky series should again be compatible with any version past 1.16; 2004 and 2005 may function with earlier versions but this cannot be guaranteed. These are provided as historical curiosities only, but do show where many of the ideas behind This Wreckage and When the Freedom Slips Away originated.

    • Kelljn visits three places after you defeat him in the cave, in this order:

      1. The ruined city in the jungle.
      2. The ruined temple at the north-east corner of the beach.
      3. A newly-opened clearing in the swamp just east of Zherramir.
  1. This awesome map reminds me LOST in some way, I’m curious, do you know that tv-series?

And I’ve tried everything but still can’t figure how to use the arthstone. Can you please give us a suggestion? It would be very appreciated. ;)

    • I think I saw the first five minutes of one episode in Media Studies a few years ago, but I’ve only heard terrible rumours of its mad plot twists.

I can’t tell you the real secret of the Arthstone in public, but if you want to hit up the Contact Me form I’ll let you know in secret.

  2. about the arsthstone can you at least give any tip about it anything what can be done with it or maybe a location or maybe the reward or just simply anything!! plzzzz i played the game for 15h :P and i still couldn’t find what it does!

    • It’s a really really really powerful artefact. Unfortunately, there’s only one way you know how to use it; that way can be accessed at numerous completely normal locations around the map…

  3. That’s awesome map. I am interested in this map so much. I like this story.
But I got some trouble. First, how many “deal or no deal” quest in this map? I did it before, but I have jgot it second time and it’s requirement is same to the first one?
Second. I have collected 15 seasell but how to get “The Tomb of Anak’Hul” quest ?
meanwhile, I have destroyed the Althar (like a box) and two Obelisks inside the moutain (near to althar box, lead to the impasse stair)
Last one, where is kodo or koto?

    • You need to do all of the jungle city Special Agent’s quests before you get to Deal or No Deal. It’s the final one of his chain.

There is a secret area that leads to a secret switch that activates a secret bridge. Only once you’ve found all of that, will the number of seashells be tested.

The Koto hides in a cavern that leads off the south wall of one of the cave chambers. Keep your eyes peeled for hidden entrances.

    • I have done all of special agent quest, and I got “deal or no deal” quest from him second times, so I can not find the place that I could finish it (When I do “deal or no deal” in the first time, I have kill all of bandit and Murgul in corner near to the cave).
In the other hand, according to http://raodaozao.wordpress.com/wreckage/quest-guide/, I have collect enough 15 seasell and found the broken bridge in north west corner of the cave, but I can not activate this quest.

      • I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking. If there are two instances of Deal or No Deal in the quest log, then the quest has incorrectly fired twice and there is nothing more to do: this would be a bug.

Do you have a single stack of the correct number of seashells in your inventory (or in one of your backpacks) when you step between the pillars?

  4. Excuse me Rao
I have tried to look for whole the cave, but I can not find anything to solve “release sword” quest and “explore the cave”. I also try to hit 8 colunms of the gate at western side of cave, but it’s useless too. So confuse :(

    • Remember that you can rotate the camera using the cursor keys. Maybe this will reveal some more obelisks? Don’t waste your time trying to destroy things that don’t appear to take damage — concentrate on the easy ones.

  5. This Wreckage is the best WC III I have ever played and I think it is the best of all. Now I’m playing “When The Freedom Slips away” and have some questions.

“This Wreckage”… How many quests are there? 53?
What did you change/add in the Gamma Version?

“When the Freedom slips away”… I cant find the White Murloc could you help me a bit?
I found that Emerald but I can’t place it on the Obelisk near the Murloc village, where i killed that Mulgul Boss. Any help?

    • Ohh and before I forget… Does the Archstone have any use? And what exactly happens after I placed all the Phat Lewts at the Altar?

    • Aye, 53 quests. New to version Gamma were things like Ancient Knowledge’s Upgrade quest, Kelljn the samurai, the Hollow Sword, Seagoats… Plus lots of little bitty refinements and new items across the game.

You can’t place the emerald in the obelisk until it’s time to do so; progression through the quest is required first. The White Murloc is a master of hiding, so you might need something to… shed light on the situation.

The Arthstone is a powerful artefact and the Phat Lewts are a scam. :)

    • “Powerful artifact” – Ugh! But thank you for you answer

Well, does that Lumber Wish really nothing, because it could remove that big tree, which appears in the midgame, that blocks the way between the jungle and the swamp. Then it would atleast have any sense…

Ahh and by the way: White Chinaaaaa

      • Lumber really does do nothing. I had to put something in there to confuse people.

I’m sure I made that tree disappear a couple of quests after it stops being relevant…

    • Oh and.. just a Question that got in my Mind … that Obsidian Warrior in the Mountain is called Pyraeus too, aint it?

      • Naw, nobody’s called Pyraeus anywhere. There is a Tyrriun in the swamp (Purple Scholar’s quest), but he’s only a minor Ancient nobody cares about.

    • I could swear there was an Obsidian Warrior inside the mountain you had to fight with 2 Energy Obelisks called Pyraeus or something like that before you could face Five… burns on my Tongue right now. :D

Well I could check by my self but then I’d have to play This Wreckage from the beginning because I didnt safe there. Ugh ._. and the World Editor crashes if I want to load the map. Mhmm…

  6. Firstly I want to ask about Yx (angel) Where I need to lead him back? which base? (someone told me the special agent in jungle but it’s useless, I have tried it 3 times)
Second: How to upgrade Ancient ? (enpower for diamond quest)
Third: Where is Stantopool? (to finish Demonlish quest ? I don’t remember clearly)
Fourth: What can I do with ancient text and Seasell?
Fifith : How to release the sword that look like Lich King?

    • Yx needs to go to the Special Agent in “Agent City”, the secret town in the jungle. The activation radius is perhaps a little small; make sure you’ve dragged Yx close enough to trigger the response.

To upgrade Ancient Knowledge, take the empty crystal to the fountain in the north-east corner of the temple. There’s a break in the wall that leads to it — place the crystal in the fountain to empower it.

Stentopol is the Murloc town at the south-east corner of the temple.

Ancient texts are valuable to merchants. Any special quest texts will be marked with the description “Important Item” — if a text doesn’t have this label, there is nothing important about it and you’re best to sell it. Secret seashells are… well, their purpose is a secret!

Look around in the caves for a source of heat. The old walls are crumbly and there are many natural caves that can be accessed through cracks in the walls.

  7. Rao, I ran all over that (huge!) map, and couldn’t find where the Hollow Sword quest started – can I get a hint on that one?

    • The Hollow Sword can be found (and I had to load the map up to check this ‘cos I couldn’t remember — oof) in a barrel near Captain Gryphon’s bandit camp in the northern area of the jungle. Finding the sword will activate the quest, causing a crate elsewhere to become vulnerable.

  8. Amazing Map Rao. I am not the type to comment, but when, as Five died with a pillar of white fluffy rings descending (ascending?) from him, Henrick farted – I just couldn’t help but share that. That’s one way to get the final word in!

  9. In “When the Freedom Slips Away”, I can’t get past the cinematic where the bad guy (lvl 10) is slain by Henrik and utters “Argh!” (in the Cave past the portal). It just kind of freezes after that. The rain is still falling, the music is still playing, but it’s just stuck in the cinematic. Can’t move or even go to the menu.

Sorry to bother you but I like the game and it bugs me that I can’t go further ;)

    • This bug has appeared intermittently from the very beginning, and I’ve never ever been able to work out why. The best I can do is suggest you try to skip the cinematic before it breaks (or even while it’s stuck, but I doubt that’ll work).

    • Well, I got it working on my Windows installation so maybe it’s just a Mac issue. Thank you for the reply .

Great game by the way… Now on to “This Wreckage” :)

      • I never developed on a Mac and it happened to me waaaay back (when it was still called RDZ’s All-In-One Micro Map), so that can’t be it… Anyway. Hopefully your run of This Wreckage will be a little happier!

  10. This is by far the best wc3 map ever made. Especially the sound/music and light effects are outstanding.

Played it twice, first time I had to cheat to beat the endboss because I ran out of potions… second time I was prepared appropriately, found all seashells and phat lewts, too ;-) .

      • btw, this first playthrough was way back in 2008, alpha version or something like this….I always intended to play it again, but, yeah, times goes by, finally I did it this year with gamma %-).

  11. Loved the story about the Phat Lewts :p Nice reward from it aswell ^_^
Can anyone tell me what the diamonds are all about? And the stick from the blacksmith? Tried giving them to erika but she don’t want them :o

    • Maybe you tried giving one to Erika a bit early? I mean, you’ve usually got to build a relationship with somebody before they’ll accept random gifts — especially body-sized diamonds.

  12. Hi there,

I’ve been playing and replaying this map ever since I first got wind of it a year ago, and I’m loving it. One question though: Where are the Grints located in the North Annex (e.g. the area outside of the entrance leading into the mountain)?

I’m pretty sure I’ve gotten all of the Grints in the other areas (if I recall correctly):

    - Beach: One just west of the village and one close to where the civilian was caged at the beginning of the game…

    - Swamp: One on the path leading to/from the captured turtle owner and one on a short side path close to the temple door…

    - Jungle/Abandoned City/Agent Base: One close to the temple door, and one on the main path in the jungle…

    - Mountain: One on the main path leading to area of the the two villages and ???

My memory’s rusty so I might have gotten some of them muddled in my head…hopefully you can help me out as this has really bugged me (and I’m the kind of OCD RPG player who has to find everything). Thanks!

    • And there’s your mistake — the other north annex Grint is inside the mountain, near the Imprisoned Blade. Good to see you’re having fun anyway. I am a similarly OCD player, hence why I filled the place with secrets and hidey-holes.

  13. So where is this Panther’s Den?
I zoomed out and looked averywhere in the jungle, but all in vain…. spent well over 2 hours looking.

    • that kept me for ages too, its really hidden its round the middle in a really small opening that doesn’t actually open, you need to walk up close to it then it will appear

  14. Wow, stunning and flawless map, highly commendable effort rao. Completely stuns me someone BY THEMSELVES has easily created the best map on warcraft 3, simply amazing! completed everything and was absolutely worth the 7 hours :)
cant wait to see what u have made for RDZ next :)
also curiously, after doing everything i saw the end clip with the scorpid plus unkown guy? Please tell meyour going to make the sequel!!

    • I’m very pleased that you enjoyed it. :)

Yes, there was a planned sequel, but it’s only ever been planned. I know how it starts and how it ends, but very little about what happens in between. Alas, I won’t be making it for Warcraft III; I’m currently rebooting the whole thing for some as yet unknown future elsewhere.

      • Ahh ok fair enough, still good to see you have the plan heh :P
please drop the details of what comes next on the webste, i cant wait to follow up haha

  15. Hi RDZ
I am a big fan of yours and had played “When the Freedom Slips Away” and loved it. I have been trying to download “This Wreckage” for 2 days but everytime I clicked on the download link that you provided, the result is always just a plain text saying “It Works!”. I have checked my Internet and there is no problem with it, so I’m not sure if war3.incgamers.com is down or something?
How else do I get the map? Would you please email me the map?

  16. Thanks For The Epic Map Rao Dao Zao.
I still haven’t finished it ( well I’m one of those who finishes all the side quests ) and I’m stuck searching for the seabank to go kill the whalehunters so I was wandering for the whole swamp killing everything that moved or wasn’t willing to move but still didn’t find it
could someone here lend me a hand?

  17. hi, i just finished the game after enjoying it for 10 hours or so…and i’m planning on doing it one more time and solo (no companions), but the problem is i want to complete all quest possible so, is there a way to uh..like, make your companion get stuck somewhere so they wouldn’t follow???tnx
oh and btw…i found a little problem that required me to reload the game, the enemy who has stairs behind him (forgot the name),which u need to kill…i kinda used the “banish” on him and he ran away, and i can’t follow him because of an imaginary boundary…
    great game nonetheless

    • There is no way to lose your companions short of killing them. You could just give them terrible equipment and go into a fight… Accidents will happen…

Banish lets people walk through walls? This is a distressing development.

      • he didn’t actually walk through walls…he simply run away to south and when i try to follow it says “i must kill…” like that…so its stuck…
but that was a quick reply, tnx

  18. ok i have looked everywhere and i cant find the explosives for the blockage quest. it said they were on the ship but i couldn’t click on the ship so i looked everywhere and i didn’t find anything. help?

  19. This Wreckage is still the best WCIII-Rpg-map for me. Especially combined with the music from Unreal and Deus Ex this Wreckage is a masterpiece. Thank you so much!

  20. The first map was excellent…gameplay..music(i got hookep up fast)..story 10/10…it made me reinstall wc3 after being so bored with it.The second map…masterpiece..I’ve spent many hours playing it…encountering no problems at all.Congratulations…you’ve done a wonderful job.

P.S …i kinda need a little help ..can’t seem to find “a koto” to complete the quest…although i’ve searching 7 times the entire map JUST for it.
Btw…koto…it reminds me of the band named koto. There is a track “Visitors” (a slightly different from the original) which i like very much.
    Cheers!

    • “Koto” is the original name for the WC3 “Kodo”, as you can see by some texture paths. No other reference, I’m afraid.

The Koto is hidden inside the mountain cave. Look for cracks in the south walls of the underground complex.

      • …thanks…although i’ve found it the following morning when the ideea of messing a little with the camera occured to me :) ).Anyway i’ve finished the map…good times there :D …cheers
How was the 3 day event?

  21. Oh, and if in the future, for some reason, you plan to make a full voiced map (cutscenes etc), please leave an option (or download) to turn of those voices. (this goes for the voices made either by somebody else or by you). I mean no offense with this, but in some costum rpgs that i played it was those voices that ruined most of it.

  22. Finished the game, took me 14:29 (got 82821 points).

The new version is so much better than the last (well duh) It especially boosted the endgame (form the north gate to the end) part more that was somehow lacking. The heroes guild, the book, and the summon (the spiked thingy) where an exelent addon.

I manged to keep all of my companions alive (the grunt lived but the geek squad died :( ), that was the most difficult part of the whole endgame, keeping Nikki alive that is, she had the best armor i had, to bad there isn’t (or a was unable to find) and item that can cut the magic damage by %, since that has been killing me most of the time. That and “the area” (when the units that go to far from the Henrik ignore all and come back), that really messed some of my attacks on him.

I am probably going to play it trough again with another spells and suff.

Thank you for this great game :)

But i like the last battle, it was special and i made use of the running shoes like never before.

The only thing that is missing is sort of a good bye (or whatever) dialog with the remaining characters.

    • I was only able to find it because I searched all over the map and was visiting the black spots on the map. Talk about space optimization, there is so much in this map, yet nothing looks that much cramped. (The Samurai quest also surprised me in the same way ).

  23. Btw, i noticed some red pigs at the portal, do they play some role? (I forgot to try and bring The Pig to them who know what might have hapened…)

  24. Even better, what if the island from the your first Henrik map ends up as being the center part of the archipelago, due to the floating islands that came crashing down from some reason (the reason that is located deeply beneath that island in the caves…)

    I’ll shut up now :)
